Daniel Grothe The Power of Place

About this episode

Daniel Grothe and the guys discuss his new book, The Power of Place, which speaks the sense of loneliness that many feel in today's age of hypermobility and noncommittal wandering, reminding us of the ancient vow of stability and teaching us how we can lead a richer life of friendship, community, and purpose. They also touch on the deconstruction movement within the church, how authoritarian leadership has wounded and undermined trust, and how healing and connection are available only where we practice the long game of family.

-True Wisdom is knowing the Lord-

‘Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise loving kindness, judgement and righteousness in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord. Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will punish (visit upon) all them which are circumcised with the uncircumcised; Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that are in the utmost corners, that dwell in the wilderness: for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart’. —Jeremiah 9:23-26

Romans chapter 2 in New Testament fleshes(!) out this circumcision business!!!

    This is interesting:

“For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the Lord: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered’. —Jeremiah 10:21

Anybody experience a pastor like this? Jeremiah is a tremendous book and there is tons more relevant stuff applicable to our 21st Century mindset—I recko y’all read it through for yourselves. Don’t take my word for it…take His Word for it—lol!!!

      Hey Benjamin,

      Thanks for sharing.

I’m not sure I’m tracking with your thoughts. Jeremiah is a great book, but I’ve missed your application.

As to abusive leadership, it’s heartbreaking how many have been hurt. As Daniel noted, spiritual abuse is one of the most traumatic experiences a person can walkthrough. I appreciated him recognizing and, as a pastor, apologizing on behalf of abusive leadership within the church.

I have certainly experienced it and am thankful for God’s reconciling love that heals.

Praying grace and life and wonder over you today!
