Lloyd Clark The Life I Dreamed Of
I sit down with my dad—my best friend—to talk about his memoir, The Life I Dreamed Of, a story we’ve been circling for decades. What unfolds is a journey through trauma, religion, and striving, into the surprising discovery that God was never distant—and neither were we. We explore the weight of calling, the lies of separation, and the slow awakening to a love that doesn’t need to be earned. This is a conversation about moving from fear to trust, lack to abundance, and performance to rest. And at the center of it all is this: you’re not trying to find the portal—you are the portal.
Jason Clark is a relational theologian, storyteller, husband, and dad who believes the gospel is better than the last time we checked. He's the author of several books, the host of Rethinking God with Tacos, and lives in Cornelius, NC, with his wife, Karen, and their four kids.

Loved this podcast! It is so wonderful to see the love and close relationship woven tightly between you two. I loved all the stories and listening to part of Lloyd’s journey. When I wrote a brief summary of my story of learning to live loved in the early days of the Facebook group, I remember your dad Lloyd’s reply and it really encouraged me. It is neat when you hear another person’s story/journey, and you can deeply relate to certain parts. Wayne Jacobson’s book “He Loves Me,” was also a turning point for me and I also bought many books and gave them away. Whenever my daughter gets invited to a wedding and asks me to go with her, I get that book as part of the present. I’m sure I would be friends with your parents, Jason if I live closer to you guys. I am the one who was raised in Queens, N.Y., spent a few years in Plattsburgh NY, and have been living in Alaska since 1981.
Jason, I wanted to let you know I am still out here listening to the podcasts, buying some of the books. I am not big on social media, and I am pretty busy still working as a 2nd grade teacher. I hope Derek is doing well. This past winter I met with a small group on Sundays at someone’s home and we have been listening to the series you and Baxter did, “Across All Worlds.” I really appreciate the work you are doing and the hope it carries.
I’m so glad this podcast resonated! Yeah, dad’s my hero for sure. And his story lands! Thanks for sharing, I loved that Wayne Jacobsen book as well and it connects with so many – this is such a beautiful gospel!
There’s no doubt you and my parents would be friends if you were closer 🙂
One of these days, I’m gonna get up to Alaska, it’s on the bucket list. We’ll have to have a coffee if that happens!
And yes, Derek is doing well. We see each other at least once a week, we have a group that fellowships on Saturday nights, and he’s a part of that. Yeah, he’s actually thriving. Life is full for him, though otherwise I’d have them on the podcast a whole lot more.
And Baxter is the man! So thankful for him and all the ways we’ve been able to connect and absolutely love doing a across all worlds with him.
Thanks for reaching out, praying grace and wonder over you today!
Hey guys! I had so much fun listening to this podcast over here in Scotland. Your voices are so comforting and familiar to me after all the years of listening. I definitely laughed at the story of tobogganing under the wire fence – Lloyd, it’s definitely the Canadian in you that keeps you so hard core. haha As always, thank you both for sharing your experiences with God’s love!
Yeah, it was sweet to have Dad on again! His book is really fun and beautiful.
And yes, it’s the Canadian for sure!! Not sure I’ll see ya in Edinburgh in May (it’d be awesome if I do). Looking forward to seeing Scotland!!
